Silicone Breast Implants vs. Saline Breast Implants for Breast Augmentation

When you come to our Alexandria office for breast augmentation, you will be provided the option of silicone or saline filled breast implants. Board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Eric Desman, will discuss all of your options with you during your initial consultation and help you decide between silicone vs. saline implants to find the type most suited to meet your needs.

Silicone Implants

Silicone implants come pre-filled to the exact specifications determined by Dr. Desman during your Alexandria breast augmentation evaluation. Because they are prefilled, the incisions for silicone implants will need to be a bit larger.
Many women find the aesthetic benefits of silicone implants more to their liking. Silicone implants are less likely to have cosmetic defects such as wrinkling, rippling, and double bubble. Silicone implants also feel more like natural breast tissue to the touch.

Saline Implants

Saline implants are filled after they have been placed, which allows for a smaller incision. Saline implants are the only option for women under the age of 22 and may offer the benefit of easier rupture or leak detection.

Like silicone implants, saline implants have both benefits and drawbacks. The drawbacks of saline implants include a larger likelihood of cosmetic imperfections and increased instances of sagging when placed above the muscles in the chest. Saline implants may also feel less natural than their silicone alternatives.

No single solution is either perfect or suited for every frame. During your initial consultation, Dr. Desman will help you determine the type of breast implant that will best help you reach your goals.
