Ideal Candidates for Male Plastic Surgery

Over time, the face and body undergo unwanted cosmetic changes. While these changes are gradual at first, you may start to feel uncomfortable with your appearance over time. Perhaps your face has lost the chiseled definition it once had, or you can’t eliminate pockets of fat on the body no matter how much you exercise.

If you feel dissatisfied with how age, weight gain, or other factors have altered your face and body, then you might be the perfect candidate for male plastic surgery.

Many local patients come seeking correction for:

  • Enlarged breasts (gynecomastia)
  • Exercise-resistant fat on the “love handles,” abdomen, and under the chin
  • Loss of facial definition due to sagging
  • Lines and wrinkles on the face

Our practice offers both surgical and non-surgical options for Northern Virginia and Alexandria men who’d like to enhance their appearance. When it comes to non-surgical treatments, most healthy men are suitable candidates. For surgical operations like gynecomastia surgery or liposuction, Dr. Desman will determine your candidacy curing your consultation.

What Male Plastic Surgery Procedures Are common?

There are many different operations that our office features under its umbrella of male plastic surgery, including but not limited to:

Gynecomastia Correction

Gynecomastia is the medical name for excessive breast tissue in males. This accumulation of tissue may be caused by factors like medications, hormones, and weight fluctuations. Even thin men may experience gynecomastia. While a proper diet and exercise can often help with larger breasts in men, sometimes, the excess glandular tissue continues to exist. For these patients, even regular exercise and healthy diet will not change the size of the breasts.

It’s estimated that up to 40-60% of the adult male population has this condition – if you are considering treatment for gynecomastia in Northern Virginia or Alexandria, you should not feel ashamed. Male breast reduction is currently the only long-lasting and effective procedure for correcting this issue. With the help of board-certified surgeon Dr. Desman, you can restore a more defined appearance to your chest. For patients whose gynecomastia is caused by fat deposits, Dr. Desman offers male liposuction techniques that are specifically designed to remove fat while encouraging skin to conform to underlying muscle. This will help your body achieve a masculine physique once the area has fully healed.

In cases where gynecomastia is caused by excess glandular breast tissue, an excision technique is commonly used. With this approach, Dr. Desman will make an incision and remove excess breast tissue and skin. The nipples may also be repositioned to restore a natural appearance.

Liposuction

Men tend to accumulate fat on the flanks (“love handles”) and the abdomen. Even with a healthy diet and plenty of exercise, pockets of fat in these areas do not always respond to traditional weight-loss methods. Fortunately, liposuction for men can eliminate unsightly bulges of fat, revealing a toned, youthful shape.

While liposuction is not a weight-loss method, it is an excellent way of targeting stubborn fat that cannot otherwise be eliminated through traditional means. Our clinic has extensive experience with the leading liposuction techniques including power-assisted liposuction, tumescent liposuction, and SAFELipo®.

Rhinoplasty

A strong profile is one of the defining characteristics of the male ideal, but cosmetic flaws like a dorsal bump or crooked nasal bridge can affect the balance of facial features. Many local men choose to undergo rhinoplasty to correct these and other cosmetic concerns, which inspires more confidence in the way they look. No matter your reasons for seeking rhinoplasty, Dr. Desman would be happy to create a treatment plan that aligns with your cosmetic tastes and goals.

Facelift

Many men in Alexandria or Northern Virginia, want to look as good as they feel. While age-related changes may cause you to appear older or more tired than you actually are, a facelift allows you to take control of your looks. This popular procedure can smooth out wrinkles and lift the deeper structures of the face for a naturally rejuvenated appearance. Whether you need to keep pace with younger colleagues in your field or you simply want to refresh your look, a facelift can restore what age has claimed.

Eyelid Lift

The delicate tissues surrounding the eyes are especially vulnerable to age-related changes in men. Over time, you may notice wrinkles developing in this area, in addition to sagging eyelid skin and puffy eyebags. This can lead to a tired look or people asking if you get enough sleep. Blepharoplasty, commonly known as an “eyelid lift,” is a surgical procedure that can tighten sagging skin, eliminate wrinkles, and remove the fatty tissues that cause eyebags. Whether performed as a standalone procedure or in combination with other treatments, this option can produce exceptional results.

Non-Surgical Procedures for Men

Meanwhile, many male patients benefit from seeking a non-surgical procedure. These treatments are powerful, flexible, and minimally invasive, which makes them a great way to address numerous cosmetic concerns.

Botox®/Bro-Tox and More

Injectables have become increasingly popular for men seeking facial rejuvenation in Northern Virginia. Dr. Desman offers a full range of injectables, including dermal fillers and neuromodulators like Botox® Cosmetic. Dermal fillers reduce the signs of age by filling in surface depressions like nasolabial folds and marionette lines, and they can restore volume to areas that have lost their youthful fullness. They can also be used to sculpt the face, allowing you to achieve defined facial contours.
Neuromodulator injections, like Botox® Cosmetic, are effective against wrinkles caused by repeated muscle contractions, such as crow’s feet, furrows between the eyebrows, and forehead lines. These injections contain the neurotoxin Botulinum Toxin A, which is a manufactured version of a naturally occurring bacterium. When injected, neuromodulators force the underlying facial muscles to relax, making movement-related wrinkles disappear.

Kybella®

Excess volume under the chin is a frustrating cosmetic concern that many local men struggle with. Even if you work out regularly, aging or genetics may cause you to accumulate unwanted fat under the chin that makes you look older or out of shape. With Kybella®, men no longer have to live with the dreaded double chin.

Kybella® is an injectable treatment made from synthetic deoxycholic acid, which is identical to a substance that helps your body dissolve fat. When strategically injected into areas under the chin, this acid dissolves fat cells. Eventually, the fat cells are flushed from the body. A Kybella® double chin treatment can be completed in just 15-20 minutes, and it requires absolutely no surgery or general anesthesia. Results can usually be seen after about 2-4 treatments spaced a month apart, and patients can expect their results to be permanent.

Proper Skin Care

Finally, skin care is something that men often overlook. However, with the right products, you can have a complexion that is clear, radiant, and healthy. Dr. Desman has a full line of specially formulated products that are effective on all skin types. Whether you need to keep oily skin in check, or you’d like a product that reduces the signs of aging our team would be happy to assess your skin and recommend a product that’s right for you.

During the first few weeks, swelling will reach its peak. If you feel like there hasn’t been any improvement, it’s important to realize that your chest will look much different once the swelling has subsided. To help reduce swelling and to facilitate healing, you may be fitted with a snug, elastic garment to wear.

Strenuous activity should be avoided for the first three weeks, and it will probably be about a month before you can resume your regular daily activities. By three months after your gynecomastia surgery in Northern Virginia, the final results should be apparent.

Liposuction

Patients who’ve undergone liposuction might experience soreness, bruising, and swelling for the first few days, and you may need to wear a compression garment to help your body heal. You should be able to return to work within a week, but strenuous activity will need to be avoided for around a month.

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty recovery is typically not overly burdensome, but you may experience discomfort during the first 2-10 days and bruising for the first few weeks. Patients usually return to work within a week or two.

Facelift

After a facelift, most patients can still carry out light activity that same day. However, you should plan on resting for at least a week, and exercise should be avoided for two weeks. Most patients return to work after two weeks.

Eyelid Lift

Swelling and bruising will peak during the first week after an eyelid lift, and your sutures will be removed after about 3 days. Most patients can return to work within 7-10 days.

Non-Surgical Treatments

Most non-surgical treatments require little-to-no downtime. Injectables may cause brief, mild swelling or redness. Kybella® may produce temporary bruising, swelling, and numbness, but these symptoms are only temporary.
