Can I Have Children After a Tummy Tuck?

If you have already received a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) and you are pregnant or are considering expanding your family, you may be worried about what effect having a child can have on the results of your surgery. Many people come to Dr. Desman with this concern.

Our tummy tuck is designed to eliminate stubborn, excess fat on the midsection, abdomen, and stomach that does not respond to diet or exercise. When performed by Dr. Desman, a tummy tuck can give you a slim, trim and toned midsection.

However, our clients worry that a future pregnancy may undo these results and wonder whether or not they can have children after a tummy tuck. Dr. Desman generally advises that abdominoplasty will not put your pregnancy at risk, nor will it prevent you from having children in the future. That being said, the best time to pursue a tummy tuck is when you are finished with your family planning.

Will A Tummy Tuck Put My Future Pregnancies at Risk?

The short answer is no, abdominoplasty will not put your future pregnancies at risk. From a medical standpoint, there are no inherent risk factors for pregnancy after receiving a tummy tuck procedure. The truth is that patients who are pregnant following their tummy tuck have an equally high chance of carrying a healthy, full-term pregnancy as women who have never received abdominoplasty. In other words, having a tummy tuck does not put your pregnancy at risk nor does it affect the outcome of your pregnancy.

Can I Maintain my Tummy Tuck Results after Getting Pregnant?

This is where it gets a little tricky. The truth is that your pregnancy is very likely to affect the results of your tummy tuck. With the significant weight gain and abdominal stretching that will occur during the pregnancy, it is very likely that you will once again have excess tissue.

In general, if you find yourself with these issues, you will need surgical correction and revision to restore your original tummy tuck results. However, this is not always the case. If you can control your pregnancy weight gain as best as you can, you may not need to undergo a revision procedure. Dr. Desman recognizes that the relationship between abdominoplasty and pregnancy and can answer questions about your unique situation during your consultation.
