SAFELipo®

Dr. Desman First To Offer Groundbreaking SAFELipo® Procedure in the Northern Virginia area.

SAFELipo® is a non-thermal, comprehensive, multi-faceted body contouring process that incorporates contour augmentation, redistribution and reduction into a single procedure.

Originally developed to address the challenges of revising previous liposuction procedures that had produce less than desirable results, SAFElipo® offers a unique 3-step process of separation, aspiration and fat equalization that can consistently produce dramatic, smooth and natural contours.

This pioneering process allows for dramatic yet natural–appearing results, and may cause less of the tissue damage, dermal adhesions and surface irregularities frequently caused by other forms of liposuction.

So What Makes SAFELipo® Different?

Unlike other forms of liposuction, SAFELipo® first loosens, softens and separates out the unwanted fat cells, gently removes them, then smooths the remaining thin fat layer without generating heat, keeping valuable blood vessels, skin and other tissues from being damaged or destroyed.

How Does SAFELipo® Work?

(The explanation below is offered by Simeon Wall, Jr. MD FACS originator of SAFELipo®)

SAFELipo® is the first and only body contouring technique to incorporate the 3-step process of fat separation, aspiration and equalization, a patented process that combines the benefits of liposuction, fat shifting and fat grafting.

Step 1: Separation

During the first step of SAFELipo®, Fat Separation, the surgeon employs specialized “exploded” probes with power-assisted liposuction (PAL) to separate the targeted fat globules from each other and from their surrounding attachments without tearing or otherwise damaging the delicate stromal network and supporting blood vessels. The separation process allows these fat cells and globules to become “loose and emulsified” without the generation of heat, thereby eliminating the damaging effects of the thermal energy seen with other forms of liposuction available today.

Step 2: Aspiration

Most liposuction procedures include some form of aspiration, which simply refers to the removal of the fat cells using suction. Because the separation stage decreases the resistance and adherence of the targeted fat, the SAFELipo® surgeon is able to use smaller, thinner cannulas to remove it, but is able to prevent suction avulsion injuries seen with other forms of liposuction, resulting in a healthy, thin resulting fat layer with intact blood vessels and surrounding tissue. This less traumatic approach greatly reduces or eliminates bruising, decreases swelling after surgery, and prevents excessive internal scarring.

Step 3: Fat Equalization

The final component of SAFELipo®, fat equalization, is vital to ensuring optimal long-term results. After extracting the targeted fat cells, the surgeon turns his or her attention to the light layer of fat that remains after aspiration. This important layer, left intact by the previous two steps, is then equalized with fat equalization probes without utilizing suction. The thin, even layer of subcutaneous fat that remains is an absolute necessity for the smooth, toned, and natural appearance coveted by liposuction patients.

With equalization, the SAFELipo® surgeon usually utilizes PAL with the specialized “exploded” fat equalizing probes to smooth this layer of fat, leaving a smooth blanket of “local” fat grafts to prevent adherence of the skin down to the underlying muscle layer. By preventing this adhesion of the skin’s dermis down to the muscle’s fascia, the SAFELipo® process is able to prevent the most persistent and pervasive problem with liposuction since it was invented more than 30 years ago: contour irregularities. What does this mean for patients? Preventing contour irregularities is the key to eliminating wavy skin, lumps, divots and other unfavorable and unnatural results of liposuction surgery – until SAFELipo®, very difficult to avoid, even in the most experienced surgeons’ hands. This crucial step, the cornerstone of SAFELipo®’s innovative foundation, is the source of the buzz that has surrounded the technique since its inception.

Liposuction has been and remains the gold standard of body contouring and SAFELipo® offers the possibility of dramatic changes and superb results – in the hands of the right surgeon. Don’t be dazzled by buzz words and clever marketing tactics. Do your homework and research the procedure AND the physician. Ask lots of questions and remember when looking for a physician to perform SAFELipo® – all surgeons who attend and complete a SAFELipo® training course are board-certified plastic surgeons. Board certification is earned only after completing a minimum of 5 years of surgical training following medical school to develop both technical skill and aesthetic judgment. Make sure your surgeon meets these standards.

Frequently Asked Questions About SAFELipo®

SAFE is an acronym that stands for the three steps of the process: separation, aspiration, and fat equalization. The primary difference between SAFELipo and traditional liposuction is the fat equalization stage, which allows Dr. Desman to redistribute fat more evenly for a more contoured appearance. During this portion of the procedure, Dr. Desman performs micro fat transfers to ensure the smoothest possible curves upon healing.

Shreveport, LA, plastic surgeon Dr. Simeon Wall Jr. pioneered the SAFELipo technique in 2010 to address the unique challenges presented by revision liposuction procedures, but he soon realized it could benefit all body contouring patients. Dr. Desman traveled to Shreveport to learn how to perform SAFELipo under the tutelage of Dr. Wall, and he is the only plastic surgeon in Northern Virginia and the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area currently offering this option.

Yes! When Dr. Desman is consulting with you about your aesthetic concerns and goals for reshaping your body, he may recommend other procedures you can consider adding to your SAFELipo for even more stunning results. For instance, you might want to think about asking Dr. Desman to perform a breast augmentation or lift, a tummy tuck, or even a non-surgical improvement such as ThermiVa alongside your SAFELipo. Combining procedures is a smart option for patients with busy lifestyles who only want one recovery period.

Yes! Revision liposuction patients are often some of the best candidates for SAFELipo. This procedure is an excellent follow-up treatment to address any lumps, bumps, ripples, asymmetry, or other less-than-desirable results from a traditional liposuction procedure.

If you’re in good overall health, do not smoke, and are near or at your goal weight, you’re likely well-suited to get SAFELipo. However, Dr. Desman does not recommend SAFELipo if you are significantly overweight. The goal of any form of liposuction is to provide body contouring in targeted areas, not to help people lose a dramatic amount of weight. Indeed, the number you see on the scale might not shift much, if at all, after SAFELipo.

Depending on the extent of body contouring you desire, Dr. Desman can treat multiple areas of the body with SAFELipo, including the abdomen and sides, thighs and legs, breasts, bra roll fat, arms, face, and neck.
