Spider Veins Northern Virginia

Although spider veins don’t typically cause any problems, the appearance of them may make you feel self-conscious about yourself. Many people with spider veins find themselves avoiding wearing shorts, skirts, or swimsuits as to not show their legs. If you are seeking treatment of spider veins, Washington DC cosmetic surgeon Dr. Eric Desman can help. To schedule a consultation, call the Virginia Center for Plastic Surgery today at (703) 924-3144.

What are Spider Veins?

Spider veins form when a group of veins become dilated and appear closer to the surface of the skin. In general, they are red or blue in color and look like spider webs. Spider veins most frequently appear on legs and the face; however, it is possible for them to appear on other parts of the body as well.

In addition to the appearance of spider veins, some people may experience symptoms such as:

  • Swollen ankles or legs
  • Aching or general leg discomfort
  • A heavy feeling in the legs
  • Leg cramps
  • Restless leg syndrome
  • Itching
  • Causes of Spider Veins

Spider veins become more common with age, and occur when there is increased pressure in the veins. It is not known why some individuals develop spider veins while others don’t. There are a number of factors that may put an individual at a higher risk for developing spider veins. These factors include:

    • Pregnancy
    • Standing or sitting for prolonged periods
    • Obesity
    • Sun exposure
    • Birth control pills
    • Family history
    • Wearing clothes that may be too tight

    How are Spider Veins Treated?

When treating spider veins, Dr. Desman uses sclerotherapy, which is a common treatment. During the procedure, the Dr. will inject the veins with a salt solution. The solution then allows the veins to seal shut and stop the blood flow. Over the course of a few weeks the vein will turn into a scar and fade.
