Breast Reduction

Do you feel weighted down by your breasts? Do you sometimes get backaches? Do you feel your bra straps biting into your shoulders? Breast reduction is not given as much publicity as breast enlargement, but it's just as available.

Am I a candidate?

Each one of us has a different shape and our own circumstances. If you'd like to breast-feed, it would be better to postpone breast reduction surgery until after that. Some diseases and conditions can be counter-indications, such as diabetes. But if your breasts are fully mature, by all means consult a cosmetic surgeon and learn more about how it might be done.

The breast reduction procedure

Breast reduction uses general anesthesia, which means you'll be completely asleep and won't remember the surgery. Usually, it takes 2 to 4 hours.

The incision will have an anchor-shape, circling the areola and running down to the breast crease, then running along the crease.
Excess fat, skin, and glandular tissue will be removed.
The nipple will be relocated to match your new shape and size.
There'll be stitches along the entire incision.
To protect and support the area, you'll wear a bandage or surgical bra 24 hours a day.

The recovery period

You may feel some pain for a few days, and our breast surgeon will give you a pain medication for that. For a week or so you may continue feeling some discomfort.

We'll remove the bandage after one or two days
Until the swelling and bruising fade, which usually takes several weeks, you should continue wearing a surgical bra
After one to three weeks the stitches will be removed

Go easy on yourself for 4 or 5 weeks after your breast reduction. Your breast surgeon will give you some instructions for self-care, and you can likely go back to work after about 2 weeks, if your work isn't too vigorous.

It could be 6 to 12 months before your breasts settle into their new shape. If you gain or lose much weight, get pregnant, or experience hormonal changes, these things can all affect the size and feel of your breasts.

Scarring

Each of us responds differently in how the scarring goes. For some people the initial scar will eventually fade and shrink to a thin line, although for others, the redness may tend to linger, and it may not flatten out so well. But since these scars are low on the breasts, you can wear a low neckline and a swimsuit with confidence.
