Gynecomastia Candidate Northern Virginia
Gynecomastia is the growth of glandular tissue in male breasts. It is basically the technical term for enlarged male breasts. This condition often begins during adolescence and can lead to psychological problems in both teenage and adult males.
There a number of theories as to what cause gynecomastia. While heredity plays a part, researchers and doctors can not pinpoint the exact cause.
Male breast reduction surgery
Many men who suffer from gynecomastia can undergo a male breast reduction surgery to fix the problem. Before the breast surgery is performed, Virginia cosmetic surgeon Dr. Eric Desman will evaluate your family history and examine other factors that may contribute to this condition.
He will examine you and take into consideration:
- The use of common prescription medications
- The use of anabolic steroids
- Impaired liver function
- Klinefelter Syndrome
- The use of any medications containing estrogen
- Gilbert's Syndrome
- Problems with testicular hormone production
- The use of herbal testosterone additives
- Your general health and suitability for the surgery
Once the causes of your gynecomastia have been explored, you may be asked to undergo a mammogram or breast x-ray to determine the most effective way to approach surgery.
The presence of fat, glandular material and excess skin will be assessed to ensure you will be a good candidate for this procedure.
If your gynecomastia is caused by weight gain, you may want to try a healthy diet to remedy your enlarged breasts. However, a male breast reduction may still be necessary to achieve the results you desire.
During a male breast reduction surgery, any excess glandular breast tissue will be removed and your remaining tissue will be lifted and tightened. Liposuction may also be needed to remove excess fat and sculpt your remaining tissue.
Male breast reduction surgery is just one aspect of treatment for boys with enlarged breasts. Many physicians agree that even though the causes of gynecomastia vary, the psychological aspects related to the condition need to be considered before, during and after male breast reduction surgery. You may be referred to a psychologist to address any trauma associated with gynecomastia, especially if you are an adolescent.
If you are a male suffering from gynecomastia and find it embarrassing to take your shirt off, it can hinder your quality of life. For example, you may wear loose clothes and avoid exposure in showers and swimming pools.
