Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate
Virginia Center For Plastic Surgery serving Washington DC from Virginia
In the early weeks of development, prior to a child's birth, the two sides of the lips and mouth are forming. This is when they would normally grow together. According to statistics, however, about one in every 800 babies is born with a gap in the upper lip (cleft lip) or the roof of the mouth (cleft palate).
To repair the cleft lip, Dr. Desman makes an incision on both sides of the split up to the nose. After turning the outer portion of the cleft down and pulling the muscle and skin together, the separation is closed using stitches. As the scar heals, it will become fairly invisible.
Cleft palate surgery is a little more complicated. Dr. Desman begins by making an incision on both sides of the split in the roof of the mouth (the palate). Moving muscle and tissue together from both sides, the gap is closed.
The result from either cleft lip or cleft palate surgery is both appealing and satisfying.
