Choosing the Right Size Implant

Arlington, Alexandria, Springfield, Fairfax, Fairfax County, Virginia and Washington DC

Deciding to augment your breasts may seem like the most difficult decision to make, but as you move closer to the procedure, other decisions will be equally important. One involves breast size. When you contact Northern Virginia plastic surgeon Dr. Eric Desman at the Virginia Center for Plastic Surgery, he will supply information on choosing the best breast size. Additionally, he'll help with other decisions about the surgery, including the best type of breast incision, whether to go with saline or silicone implants and the best breast shape for your body.

Breast implant size is a highly personal decision. Become familiar with the process of choosing the breast size that best enhances your body proportions. Then, choose a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon, like Dr. Desman at the Virginia Center for Plastic Surgery in Arlington, Virginia, who will ultimately increase the odds for a successful outcome.

Sizing Up Your Expectations

No two people are alike, so just because your sister increased from a size A to a size C cup with her breast augmentation surgery, doesn't mean that possibility exists for your body type, or that you couldn't go larger. Here are some of the questions that Dr. Desman will answer as he evaluates the breast augmentation procedure in your case:

  • How broad is your chest area?
  • What is the base width of your breasts?
  • How much distance exists between your breasts?
  • Is the skin laxity or looseness appropriate for the size you intend?

Determining the Size that Looks Best

When it comes to breast augmentation, photos often give you a good indication of what you may want. Dr. Desman encourages his patients to search through the before and after photos included on this website, located in the breast gallery section, to help with your decision about size.

One Size Doesn't Fit All

Doing your homework about the implant size best suited to you is the final step in determining the answer to this pre-surgery question. After getting the surgeon's input and viewing before and after photos, you'll want to conduct your own set of tests in the privacy of your home. Some of those tests include:

  • The Rice Test – take an old nylon stocking and fill it with a carefully measured amount of uncooked rice. Knowing that there are 30 cc's to an ounce, you'll want to first try 300 or 350 cc's on for size in an unpadded bra.
  • The Water Test – others find that filling a plastic baggie with water and inserting it into an unpadded bra can give good indications about the desired size.
  • The Fashion Test – after identifying the size you'd like, try that size under tailored shirts and jackets to determine whether or not your new size will appear natural without buttons popping and shirts puckering.
