Breast Augmentation - FAQ
Alexandria Breast Implants Specialists
The following section is designed to answer some of the most common questions prospective patients ask about breast augmentation surgery.
Will I be able to breastfeed after breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation usually will not interfere with your ability to breastfeed. Both subglandular and submuscular implants are distant enough from milk ducts that they should not interfere with milk production.
There is, however, some slight risk that decrease in sensation following augmentation could interfere with the reflexes required for breastfeeding. These risks may be increased somewhat with periareolar incisions.
Will breast implants interfere with mammography?
Breast implants, particularly subglandular implants, do occasionally interfere with mammography readings. See the Risks section for more information and how it can be minimized.
How long is the recovery procedure?
Recovery times for breast augmentation vary considerably, depending on technique and approach of your surgeon. You should ask your surgeon about their results. The majority of Dr. Desman's patients are able to return to normal activities and 48 to 72 hours after surgery with no special bras, no narcotic medications, and no pain pumps. This approach is further explained in The Best Breast section. This information comprises the basis of your first consultation with Dr. Desman, lasting up to an hour.
Will breast implants interfere with physical activities?
In the long term, breast implants should not affect your range of motion, muscle strength, or other physical abilities any more than having naturally large breasts might.
Some patients, particularly those who have undergone extreme enhancements, might find that their new breasts "get in the way" at first, but most adapt pretty quickly.
What size breast implants should I get?
The size of implants you choose depends on a number of factors, including your ultimate appearance goals and your individual frame. As such, this answer must be based on an individual consultation with a qualified plastic surgeon experienced with breast augmentation procedures. This is further explained in The Best Breast section.
What are the risks associated with breast augmentation?
Most of the risks of breast augmentation are risks inherent in any surgical procedure as well as those specific to breast augmentation. See the Risks section for information.
